Department of English

  • The PhD program, with its unique English Studies synthesis and emphasis on pedagogy, remains one of the most successful programs in the country in placing its graduates in college and university teaching positions.
  • The faculty remains highly productive in scholarly research, with ten highly regarded books published this past academic year and four books accepted for publication.  Professor Curtis White's The Middle Mind: Why Americans Don't Think for Themselves (Harper Collins) was widely reviewed and attracted a general audience.
  • The Department hosted an National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for High School Teachers, "Text Variants and the Teaching of Shakespeare: Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear," led by Professors Ron Fortune, Ron Strickland, and Jan Neuleib.
  • Professor Lucia Getsi was a finalist to be Poet Laureate for the State of Illinois.
